Christmas Trading Is Coming: Do You Need a Retail Security Guard This Year?

Christmas trading means longer hours, fuller stockrooms, more cash in the till and casual staff on their first shifts. A retail security guard covers the gaps that rush creates: the entrance, the floor, the register at close and the back door.

This guide is for store owners, retail managers and shopping centre tenants in Brisbane and across South East Queensland. It covers when you need a guard, which Queensland licence fits, and what to sort out before you book.

When does a store need a retail security guard over Christmas?

Not every shop does. In our view, these are the things that push a store towards booking a guard:

  • Stock that walks. Small, high-value or easily resold lines on open display.
  • Extended hours. Late-night trading, early openings and Boxing Day sales.
  • New staff. Casuals who don't yet know your regulars, your stock or your procedures.
  • Cash and close. More takings in the till, and staff walking to the car park after dark.
  • Layout and history. Several exits, blind spots, a laneway loading dock, or trouble last year.

If two or three of those apply, it's worth getting a quote for the busiest days at least.

Security officer or crowd controller: which licence fits retail?

Security work in Queensland is licensed under the Security Providers Act 1993 (Qld), and the licence has to match the job.

A security officer is someone paid to guard, patrol or watch another person's property. The Queensland Government lists loss prevention officers among the jobs that need a security officer licence. Watching stock in your store, guarding a stockroom or patrolling a loading dock is security officer work.

A crowd controller is someone paid to be at a public place mainly to keep order: screening who comes in, monitoring or controlling behaviour, and removing people. The Queensland Government lists shopping centres among the places where security work needs a crowd controller licence. If your officer will be managing a queue at a Boxing Day sale or moving on people causing trouble in a centre, the crowd controller function matters.

Three points for retailers:

  • Many retail posts mix both jobs, so ask your provider which licence each officer holds and match it to the brief.
  • The Act makes it an offence to engage someone, directly or indirectly, to do security work for reward unless they hold the right licence. Paying a staff member's mate cash to "stand at the door" puts that risk on your business.
  • Neither licence authorises an officer to carry firearms, handcuffs or batons. A retail guard's main tools are presence, observation, communication and reporting.

You can check any individual or firm on the Queensland Government's free security licence register.

What a retail security guard does on shift

Over Christmas trading, a retail guard's shift usually covers:

  • The entrance. A visible, friendly presence that greets customers and is noticed by anyone thinking about lifting stock.
  • The floor. Watching high-value displays, fitting rooms and blind spots, and backing up staff with a difficult customer.
  • The back of house. Keeping stockrooms, staff areas and the loading dock closed to the public during deliveries.
  • Close. Clearing the store, staying with staff while the registers are cashed up, and walking them to their cars.
  • Reporting. Recording incidents with times and descriptions, so you have something useful to hand to police or centre management.

At ANSIC, shifts run in Guardhouse with GPS clock-in at the site and an occurrence log that records incidents, with time-stamped photos where needed.

Shopping centre security in Brisbane: your store or the centre?

If you're a tenant, the centre's security team covers the centre. In our view, most centre teams focus on common areas, car parks, entrances and emergencies, not the inside of your tenancy. Ask centre management what their officers will and won't do for tenants over Christmas, and whether you can put your own licensed officer on your shopfront.

Strip shops and standalone stores have no centre team, so the store owner is responsible for the door. Mobile patrols can cover lockup, alarm callouts and after-hours checks when the store is closed. Cameras and alarms help, but they don't replace an officer on the floor.

Christmas retail security checklist

Before you ask for a quote, have these ready:

  1. Store address, and whether it's in a centre, a strip or standalone.
  2. The dates and hours you want covered, including late nights, Boxing Day and stocktake.
  3. What the officer should focus on: entrance, floor, stockroom, close or all of them.
  4. Your high-risk lines and where they sit in the store.
  5. Any incidents from last Christmas, or known repeat offenders.
  6. Centre management's security contact and rules, if you're a tenant.
  7. Who on your team is the contact on each shift, and their mobile.
  8. How you want incidents reported to you.

Book your retail security guard before December fills up

In our view, the busiest retail days fall on the same few weeks for every store: late-night trading in December, the last weekend before Christmas and Boxing Day. Licensed officers get booked against all of them. Confirming in November gives you time to agree the brief and brief the officer on your store.

ANSIC supplies security services across Brisbane, the Gold Coast, the Sunshine Coast, Moreton Bay, Ipswich, Logan and Redland using officers we employ. They hold the security licence the job requires, including the crowd controller function where the brief needs it, plus advanced first aid and CPR. Frequently asked questions

Do I need a security officer or a crowd controller for my store?

It depends on the job. Watching stock and property is security officer work. Keeping order in a public place, such as screening entry or removing people in a shopping centre, is crowd controller work. Many retail posts need both, so match the licence to the brief.

Can a retail security guard search bags or detain a shoplifter?

A guard's main role is to deter, observe, report and call police. Officers don't carry handcuffs or batons under these licences. Set out your bag-check policy and your process for suspected theft in the brief, and get your own advice on what you can lawfully ask of customers.

Can I book a guard for just the busiest days?

Yes. Many retailers cover late-night trading, the last weekend before Christmas and Boxing Day only. Tell us the dates and hours and we will quote on those shifts.

How far ahead should I book?

As soon as you know your trading hours. November is better than December.
